Japan from the deep seabed refining rare earth metal for LED luminescent materials

Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Japanese researchers, lawmakers and business people all hope that LED products can be made from rare earth metals in the deep sea off the coast of Japan and applied to Japan's Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.

Rare earth metals are highly concentrated in the outer seas of Minami Torishima, Japan's easternmost island of Ogasawara. Rare earths in the seabed 5,000 meters deep are estimated to be enough for 200 years in Japan.

Yasuhiro Kato, a professor at the University of Tokyo in Japan, and his research team succeeded in extracting (Yttrium) and (Cerium) from rare earth metals in the sea out of South Island as LED luminescent materials.

Several Liberal Democrats have proposed to the government that they hope to use the LEDs for the Olympic Games in Japan. The government is also considering commercializing the LEDs for use in Olympic venues to show foreign guests the richness of Japan's marine resources.

If large-scale extraction of offshore rare earth, in addition to LED light-emitting materials, but also widely used in electric vehicles, batteries and wind energy, but at this stage because of deep-sea operations is not easy, can extract rare earth metals is still limited.

One technique is to place compressed air tubes on the seabed and extract the rare earth metals using the buoyancy principle. About 30 companies, including Toyota Motor Corporation, Mitsui Shipbuilding and the University of Tokyo, have put together this technology. He formed an alliance and tried hard to apply for funding from the Japanese government to invest heavily in the research of rare earth metal refining technology.
